Scribbles

So you say you want to see the results of all that drawing business?  I know a guy who can hook you up (it's me).

Week 4: Asked and Answered

Q. What happens when you put 14 eager artists in front of a model wearing only kooky hats for 3 hours?

A. You get week 4.

It was an interesting night.  We kept our poses short and energetic.  Except for one 15 minute pose at the end, we spent our time in the 2 - 10 minute range.  It changed the tone a bit and we had a good time with it.  A few of us were challenging each other to use different materials.  I passed around a chisel-tipped pencil that became popular (and that I will be using again next week for sure).  And I rose to the challenge of using ballpoint pen.  All in all it was quite fun to never let yourself get comfortable.  Images coming soon.  Thanks to everyone for coming last night.

Week 3: The Aftermath

Okay that title was melodramatic.  Eight people showed up so it was a little easier to get around this week.  Our model David was fantastic though, and I wish more people could have been there to enjoy his work.  It looks like the folks who have been coming back more than once are seeing some good progress.  Speaking for myself (which is what I do best), I'm getting more comfortable and not feeling as rushed or shaky as I was the first week.  A few of us switched to conté.  That's how sassy things got.

The behind the scenes pictures of us spraying fixative on our charcoal drawings and taking photos of our spoils are from our very own Nick Miller.  Thanks Nick.

We'll be bringing David back soon, so those of you who missed him will get another shot.  I'll see everyone next week.  Excelsior!

The Harvest

Alexandra Zickerick 2/9/2012
A long night spent scribbling and hoping, and here we have some great results from some brave souls who chose to share.

I spent more time instructing last night, and though I enjoyed it, I'm sure there are those who have grown tired of my incessant guiding voice.  However, let it be known that I take full credit for the very impressive work done by our most nascent of illustrators.  I am the stone that sharpens their blade and the spark that ignites their passions.

I'll post more images as I get them.  Thanks again everyone for another fun night.

Sorry for the hipster playlist.  But not really.

We're Getting Good At This

So it went beautifully last night.  We had quite the turnout.  14 by my count.  The space worked out perfectly, and the night went smoothly.  Thanks to everyone who came.

First things first, I collected $10 from everyone, and the model was $100.  With 14 people, that leaves some extra.  So we've started a fund to help us with this class.  We could really use a model stand first and foremost.  I'd love to put the money into improving our experience, first with a stand, next a skeleton for anatomy reference, some props, perhaps some still life materials if there's interest in a drawing class for people who want something a bit simpler than the figure.  Thanks to everyone who has paid their change forward to the cause.

And a scheduling note: We will be doing away with the groups next week.  I'd like to see how this goes.  After a few weeks, I'd like to start theming classes.  We'll do a class of mostly short drawings for animators, a class of longer drawings suitable for painting or detailed stuff, face studies, arms and legs studies, costumes, props, etc.  So that will mean this humble website will be that much more important to keeping an eye on the schedule page.  So watch the site.  I'll be posting drawings from last night today or tomorrow.

First Night

Max Ulichney 2/2/2012
I have charcoal under my fingernails still.  It reminds me who I am.  It reminds me why we do what we do.  Sure we were rusty last night, but that's why we packed ourselves into a narrow, slightly-too-warm corner of the building for three hours last night.  We shook off some cobwebs.  We blew gently on the embers of our creativity.  We mixed metaphors.

It was a good turnout.  Ten people shared that space with our excellent model, and I was thrilled to have every one.  We had two complete rookies who did very well indeed.  They'll tell you they're embarrassed by their drawings, but what they lacked in art school education, they more than made up for in enthusiasm to try something way out of their comfort zones.  I will be proud to post their work here if they'll let me (or cave to my pressure to do so).  Emily and Sandra have my deepest respect.  I think they'd be happy to talk to you about their experience last night.

Many more fun nights like this to come, folks.  I'll improve my playlist before then.  Keep an eye out here and on the Elastic.tv Facebook page for more images from last night.
